Last night I made our dinner with tons of garden veggies. The highlight was what Sam calls the "salad that should ALWAYS be in the fridge" Cukes(picked before the snake sighting). red pepper, yellow beans(blanched), green onions, cherry tomatoes, avocado, in a lite italian dressing. Well, the comment of the night was when Garrett got up to the table and said, "Mom, I'm so gLLLad(he enunciates his "L's"), we are NOT having zucchini tonight." That got a good laugh out of me. I'm almost even sick of it(not quite) and zucchini is my first true love. We grill the spears and Molly will down 2-3 whole zucchini on her own...but Garrett hasn't quite taken to it like she has. :-)

Gardening...I think I'm addicted

The snakes
If you look closely in the first picture, you will see a surprise in our "pumpkin patch" I went out to pick a cucumber and heard a little SSSSSSSSS. It freaked me out a plenty, so I jumped out quick. I may have left a few cukes behind. I then caught site of its tail. Yuck. I went to get my camera so I could show the kids. Well, after getting a little closer up...I noticed it was actually a little snake family. A mom and two babies. How sweet. Yuck. Not going to be picking any more cucumbers. Just gives me the heebie geebies.
The stump a.k.a. my nemesis
So Sam decided to cut down this HUGE tree that was in our front yard forever ago.(I think it was the week we moved in). This big stump has been in our front yard...for months now. We looked into all kinds of things to get rid of it, and the main obstacle was the gas line that ran RIGHT next to it. So it just sat there...and sat there. I then got mad at it and drilled a million holes in it. I filled them with nitrogen and covered it. Maybe it would rot. I checked it out after a month and there were some creepy white worms, and it was maybe doing something. But I figured at the rate it was going it would rot in three years. Maybe. So I just keep walking past this thing. It became my "impossible." Well, after listening to a few talks about "doing hard things" and "doing thing we think are impossible" from my parents. I thought...this is my "impossible" because I don't really believe I can get this thing out, and no one else does either. So I got my axe, my grubbing hoe, and my shovel and I got to work. I was about 2/3rds around it. Axing through all these huge roots and I was losing hope. It wasn't even showing signs of budging. I went to borrow a tool from a neighbor, and he came over to take a look. Well, he says, "I'll be right back." He comes back with a jack and uses it to jack it up. It gave me hope. So I chopped through the rest of those roots with gusto, and it was done! Wahoo.

Timpanogos Cave
I got adventurous and decided to hike Timp cave with some friends that were in town from Encinitas. It was a lot steeper than I remembered. :-) It is a pretty steep hike. You gain about 1000 ft in elevation in less than an hour. Garrett hiked ALL the way up without any help. Molly hiked ALL the way up and down with no help. They were great little hikers. Hansen did pretty well. He had to eat twice but he made it through the cave without screaming...which is good. :-) I had forgotten how much I love the mountains. The air was so crisp and fresh. The view was incredible. A little too incredible at some points. The cliff edges stressed me a out a bit(seriously HUGE drop offs) Keeping the kids on the right side of me was a little stressful. But it really was beautiful. The cave was incredible. The pic is of the "heart" in the cave. Weighs about 2 tons and is 5-7 stalactites "grown" together...(it did not ever form a column because in this part of the cave the water evaporated so it didn't form a stalacmite on the the bottom...for all you scientists out there). Molly and Garrett only got scared during the part where they turn off all of the lights and you can't see your hand in front of you. But then the ranger did a light show on the ceiling...so it ended happy. :-)
This is a pic of Garrett at the end when the ranger said that the little hole above the exit is probably a bat cave. That perked up Garrett's attention and he proceeded to tell the ranger about his batman shirt and how bats hang upside down. :-) Molly loved the room with the unicorn and Garrett kept trying to figure out why the ranger told them to look for treasures and that they were on a treasure hunt. :-) "What a tweasure hunt!?"

Cousin's Camp 2009
This year was the inaugural year of Osguthorpe Cousin's Camp. It was so fantastic. This is quite an experience for all these cousins. They sleep in tents outside at Grandma and Grandpa O's house. The days are filled with "family history obstacle courses", Ukulele with Grandma and Lisa(and I know Grandma Sedgwick was playing up above as well), frame making(with the camp scripture to be put inside), Aunt's Devotionals, Uncle's fireside, great food, awards named after their great grandparents(more on that later), marshmallow roasting, Rock Canyon Hiking, Bean Museum fun(thanks Katy...the Bowling alley did not consult us about their carpet replacement...rude...you saved us), tons of cousin fun...etc...Molly was in heaven the whole time. She loved sleeping outside even after Logan and Juliette put the idea into Molly's mind that deer might chew through the tent and come in after them. :-) To show how intense 17 grandkids are for my kids I post the following pic after the first day when I ran home for a bit to give the boys naps...we didn't make it.(It takes under ten minutes to get to my house) :-)Thursday, August 6, 2009
Island Park
Garrett trying to sneak up on a mama caribou and her babies. He got pretty close(about ten yards) then they took off. He just wanted to "wide one of dem." He was a little disappointed.
My morning run route. So pretty. The flowers on the side of the road were so fragrant.
Mesa Falls. So amazing to me. It was kind of a scary view.
Our only major car stoppage in Yellowstone. He didn't seem to be inconvenienced at all by all of the cars. Kids loved this.
Waiting patiently for Old Faithful...this lasted for about five minutes for Garrett and then he wanted me to hold him while he whined about how he was so tiwed and his tummy was "gwumbwing." He pulled his head off my shoulder for all of one minute to watch Old Faithful's show.
Hansen was thrilled as well. :-)We just got back from our trip to Island Park, ID. What a beautiful part of the world. Highlights for me were getting on a wake board for the first time in a LONG time....taking a morning run in the fresh air(filled with wildflowers)...watching Garrett and Sam have a little man time skipping rocks...watching my husband bring in a big beautiful rainbow at Henry's Fork...tubing with the kids(Molly in particular is fun because she gets anxious for unknown stuff like her mom...and then loves it after she dares to do it)...roasted marshmallows...the big bison strolling down the middle of the road at Yellowstone. What a fun time to be with family and enjoy a beautiful part of our country.

Buried in the Sand
I loved it when he got buried, because he would just sit there...it made the beach much more relaxing. :-)
